Texas Attorney General Paxton Announces Arrests of Convicted Felons Accused of Illegally Voting

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on November 2 that his office has arrested several convicted felons accused of illegally voting. The case began with a citizen's report that convicted felons who were incarcerated, on parole or on probation had allegedly voted in Harris County. The Attorney General's Election Integrity Unit investigated, verifying the individuals' identities, voter registration records and whether they had cast ballots, and collected evidence of potential Texas Election Code violations.
Arrest warrants were issued in Montgomery County on October 30, and the individuals were later arrested. The Attorney General's Office confirmed that several of them were on parole when they voted, making them ineligible. Under Article 6, Section 1(a)(3) of the Texas Constitution, convicted felons are barred from voting except as the legislature provides; those who have fully discharged their sentences, including incarceration, parole and probation, may regain eligibility.
Paxton said the Election Integrity Unit is actively investigating additional reports of election crimes. The identities of those arrested have not been released. Election Day in Texas is November 3.
