Follow-Up: All 91 Colorado Opportunity Zones Approved for Federal Designation, Effective January 1, 2027

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced on November 2 that all 91 opportunity zones the state submitted for federal designation have been approved by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The zones take effect on January 1, 2027, when they open to long-term investment.

Opportunity zones are a federal incentive designed to encourage long-term investment in designated low-income communities, helping urban and rural areas attract new development and investment capital. The 91 approved zones are spread across the state, including several in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado.

The governor's office said the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade submitted the 91 tracts after a months-long stakeholder engagement process. The office will also provide grant funding to communities within the zones to help them attract investment, with guidance to be released before the end of the year and webinars planned for early 2027. Interested communities can sign up for updates through the state's opportunity zone webpage.
