Georgia to Begin Distributing Homeowner Tax Relief Grants This Week: $18,000 Off Homestead Assessed Value

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced in Atlanta on November 2 that the state Department of Revenue will begin distributing funds to local governments this week under the 2026 Homeowner Tax Relief Grant program, delivering property tax relief approved by the governor and the General Assembly.

The one-time program provides eligible Georgia homeowners with an $18,000 reduction in the assessed value of their homesteads for the 2026 tax year. The relief is applied directly to property tax bills rather than issued as a separate check. The Department of Revenue is processing applications and distributing funds to local governments as required documentation is submitted and verified; homeowners with a qualifying homestead exemption do not need to apply separately.

Details and frequently asked questions are available on the Department of Revenue's 2026 Property Tax Relief Grant page. Property taxes in Georgia are levied by local governments, and the state grant works by lowering assessed value; the $18,000 reduction is uniform regardless of a home's value.

The governor's office said local governments will receive funds on a rolling basis and adjust tax bills accordingly. Homeowners can confirm eligibility with their county tax office or the Department of Revenue.
