Shooting Inside Hammond Walmart Kills 25-Year-Old Employee; Suspect About 18 Arrested

A shooting inside a Walmart store in Hammond, Lake County, Indiana, on the morning of November 2 left a 25-year-old female employee dead and a male suspect of about 18 in custody.
The Hammond Police Department said officers were called at about 9:10 a.m. to the Walmart at 1100 5th Avenue after an off-duty officer reported a shooting inside the store and detained the suspect. A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect had been speaking with the employee before the encounter escalated into a physical altercation, during which he produced a firearm and shot her multiple times. She died of her injuries.
Police Captain Steve Kellogg said the suspect walked a few aisles away after the shooting, placed the gun on the ground and waited to be arrested; he remains in custody. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said the incident was domestic-related and that employees and customers were in the store at the time.
Police said the incident was isolated, with no threat to the public, and the store remained closed for the rest of the day. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not released the suspect's name or charges.
