Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

Birmingham Mayor Randal Woodfin, in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, said on the afternoon of November 1 that the gunfire outside Legion Field on the night of October 31 was in fact two separate shootings: the first wounded six people, and a second shooting across the street about eight minutes later wounded three more, for a total of one dead and eight wounded, two of them in critical condition. A 17-year-old has been detained for 48 hours for questioning. Woodfin also said the firearms involved were fitted with automatic conversion devices known as "Glock switches."

The shootings followed the annual Magic City Classic, the 85-year-old rivalry game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State played that night at the 71,000-seat Legion Field. Birmingham Police Assistant Public Information Officer Drell Freeman said shots rang out at about 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue, and officers found multiple gunshot victims on arrival.

Fire Chief Cory Moon said the nine victims ranged in age from 19 to about 30; firefighters arrived at about 7:55 p.m., treated seven gunshot victims and took them to hospitals, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Chief Michael Pickett said on October 31 that he was grateful no more people were hurt. Woodfin stressed that the event has long been known as family-friendly and safe, and the investigation is ongoing.
