Follow-Up: Senator Murphy Suffers Stroke at Son's Hockey Game, Transferred to Johns Hopkins; Office Expects Full Recovery

The office of Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy on November 1 disclosed the cause of his hospitalization and his treatment progress: the 53-year-old senator felt numbness in his arm on the afternoon of October 31 while watching his son's hockey game, was taken to a local hospital and diagnosed with a stroke, and has since been transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for further observation and treatment.
Chief of staff Allison Herwitt said in a statement that Murphy is responding well to treatment, is "alert and in good spirits," that doctors are encouraged by his progress, and that the office is optimistic he will make a full recovery. Murphy was elected to the U.S. House in 2006 and to the Senate in 2012; he is not on the ballot in this midterm election. He serves on the Appropriations Committee and is a leading voice on immigration and gun-safety legislation, a stance rooted in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said on social media on November 1 that he had been with Murphy two days earlier encouraging residents to vote on November 3. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign, also posted in support. Murphy's planned November 1 trip to New Hampshire to campaign for Democratic candidates has been affected.
