Follow-up: Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy Hospitalized After Stroke; Office Says He Is Awake and Alert and Expected to Make a Full Recovery

BALTIMORE, Maryland, November 2 — Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who suffered a stroke on Saturday, October 31, is hospitalized and under observation at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. His office said on Sunday, November 1, that Murphy is awake, alert and responding well to treatment, and that doctors are encouraged and optimistic he will make a full recovery.
According to a statement from Murphy's chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, released November 1, the 53-year-old began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while at his son's hockey game, was taken to a local hospital where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke, and was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. Herwitt said: "The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery." The office gave no severity assessment and no timetable for discharge.
Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his 2022 campaign, said on November 1 that he wished Murphy a full and speedy recovery and understood all too well how much such an illness affects one's life. Murphy is not on the ballot in the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3.
