Two Iowa Meat Processors Win $2.171 Million in Federal Grants; Upper Iowa Beef Gets $2 Million

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced on November 2 that two Iowa meat processors will receive a combined $2.171 million in federal grants to expand processing capacity.
The grants come through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP). Vice President J.D. Vance and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins previously announced that processors in 40 states would receive $57 million through the program. It is administered by the Rural Business-Cooperative Service of USDA Rural Development, and the department says it has awarded more than $200 million to independent businesses under MPPEP to date.
Upper Iowa Beef, an independently owned beef harvest and processing facility in Lime Springs, Howard County, which opened in 2017, received $2 million to address key bottlenecks in harvest, offal and byproducts, and warehousing.
Dayton Meat Products, in Malcom, Poweshiek County, received $171,459 to purchase and install meat processing equipment, expand value-added capacity, relieve a key production bottleneck, and improve efficiency, food safety and product consistency while increasing opportunities for independent livestock producers and toll-processing customers.
