Follow-Up: Secretary of State Confirms DOJ Will Monitor Voting in Three Louisiana Parishes on Election Day

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Louisiana Secretary of State's Office confirmed on November 2 that the U.S. Department of Justice plans to send election monitors to three Louisiana parishes on Election Day, November 3: East Baton Rouge, Orleans and Lafayette. The state capital, Baton Rouge, is in East Baton Rouge Parish.

In a statement, the Secretary of State's Office said federal election monitoring is nothing new and that the Justice Department has monitored elections across the country, including in Louisiana, for many years. The office said it received notice on October 21 that the department intended to send monitors to the three parishes; the Justice Department has confirmed plans to monitor elections in all 50 states, with monitors ensuring compliance with federal voting rights statutes.

Polls in Louisiana are open November 3 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters in line by 8 p.m. may still vote. The Secretary of State's Office reminded voters to confirm their assigned Election Day polling place through its website or app, since Election Day locations may differ from early voting sites.

The confirmation did not state how many monitors each parish will receive or their specific assignments.
