Missouri Transfer Guard Gunn Ruled Ineligible for the Season Over $524 Canadian League Pay

The University of Missouri men's basketball team confirmed on November 2 that transfer guard CJ Gunn has been ruled ineligible by the Southeastern Conference (SEC) for this season and will miss the Tigers' entire 2026-27 campaign in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri. A team spokesperson confirmed the ruling to the Columbia Daily Tribune.

The ruling turned on the $524 Gunn received for playing three games in May for the Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Under SEC rules, the professional contract cost him his college eligibility. Gunn had offered to repay the money, but the conference upheld the ruling.

Gunn, transferring from DePaul, had obtained a temporary restraining order in Boone County court that briefly made him eligible for a fifth season. The order expired at 5 p.m. on November 2, and the team had to submit its official roster that night; without a new injunction, Gunn became officially ineligible that evening. Missouri and Gunn say they do not intend to appeal the SEC ruling.

Head coach Dennis Gates said the team had prepared for the outcome. Missouri opens its season at home against Cleveland State on November 3 with a 16-man roster without Gunn. Gates also announced the same day that Tennessee transfer forward Jaylen Carey has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, with no timetable for his return.
