Nebraska Coach Matt Rhule Says a Fan Cursed at His 13-Year-Old Daughter: He Will Not Quit Over It

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule said at a November 2 news conference in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, that after his team's 17-10 home loss to Washington on October 31, a fan walked up to his 13-year-old daughter and cursed at her. Rhule said he will not keep coaching for people like that, and will not watch his daughter be shaken by such treatment.
Nebraska started the season 5-0 before three straight losses, each decided by seven points or fewer. Against Washington, the Huskers led 7-3 with 1:30 remaining before giving up 14 points in 15 seconds. Rhule is 24-22 as Nebraska's head coach and last year signed a contract extension through the 2032 season.
Rhule said his family had a serious conversation after the game and he weighed whether to keep coaching if it meant his children growing up in that environment. His 10-year-old daughter texted him asking him not to quit, saying she loves Nebraska and is tough. 'I'm not leaving. I'm not quitting,' Rhule said. 'I'm going to fight for the fans who care, the fans from Red Cloud who drive here, the fans listening to the game on a combine.'
