Nevada Fuel Resiliency Committee Releases Recommendations: State Holds Only About Seven Days of Fuel, Goal Is 14

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Nevada Fuel Resiliency Committee on November 2 released a series of recommendations in Carson City, the state capital, aimed at strengthening Nevada's fuel supply, reducing dependence on California and protecting consumers and businesses from supply disruptions and price volatility. The committee was established at the direction of Governor Joe Lombardo to identify vulnerabilities in Nevada's fuel supply chain and develop strategies to ensure reliable access to gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel during emergencies.

The committee noted that Nevada currently imports nearly all of its transportation fuel, with the vast majority arriving through pipeline systems originating in California, while distribution terminals in the state typically hold only about seven days of supply, leaving Nevada vulnerable to prolonged pipeline disruptions, refinery closures and other emergencies. 'Nevada cannot afford to be overly dependent on California for the fuel that keeps our economy moving,' Governor Lombardo said.

The recommendations center on three priorities: supporting pipeline projects including the Western Gateway Project and developing rail-receipt infrastructure to diversify supply; increasing available fuel supply from about seven days to 14 days through additional storage capacity; and strengthening emergency preparedness, including protocols to prioritize first responders, critical infrastructure and essential goods, regulatory waivers, and contingency plans such as temporary rail transfer sites that could operate within 72 to 96 hours.

The committee's work traces to September 2024, when Lombardo and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs jointly wrote to California Governor Gavin Newsom warning that legislation could raise gas prices in both states. In December 2025 the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security approved creating the Fuel Resiliency Subcommittee; in January 2026 Lombardo appointed the committee's members, and it held its inaugural meeting on January 13.
