Memphis Prosecutors Release National Guard Chase Video: Man Shot in the Back Downtown on July 5

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office in Memphis, Tennessee, released four video clips on November 2 showing National Guard soldiers chasing Tyrin Johnson through downtown Memphis in the early hours of July 5, 2026, before firing at him. Johnson died during the pursuit; his autopsy report showed the bullet entered his back and exited his front chest.

District Attorney Steve Mulroy confirmed that the two National Guard soldiers who fired were Alyssa Hout, then 19, and Dallas Jellnick, then 20. In a statement, the DA's office said that early on July 5, two Memphis Police Department officers heard gunshots in the downtown entertainment zone, after which Johnson fled on foot and was pursued by the officers and National Guard members of the Safe Street Force; after Johnson turned onto Union Avenue, Guard members fired and Johnson died at the scene. The office did not say which soldier's shot struck and killed Johnson.

As of November 2, the case remains under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and no charging decision has been made. Mulroy said at an October 29 press conference that his office released the footage in the interest of transparency, noting it is rare for footage of a law enforcement shooting to be made public before an investigation is complete. The Johnson family's attorney, André Wharton, said the released videos do not capture the full sequence of events and that the investigation must stay focused on whether the fatal shot was reasonable at the moment it was fired.
