Gunfight Beside Bronx Daycare: Armed Man, 49, Shot by NYPD After Refusing to Drop Weapon

In the Bronx, Bronx County, New York City, New York, NYPD officers exchanged gunfire with an armed man beside a daycare center on the afternoon of November 2. The man was shot and taken to a hospital in stable condition.
At a press conference, police said Victor Soto, 49, first menaced customers inside Sammy Gourmet Deli at Bainbridge Avenue and East 194th Street, racking his gun and pointing it at terrified patrons before walking north. Two uniformed officers saw him slam the firearm into the deli's glass window and ordered him to drop the weapon; he instead pointed the gun at the officers and opened fire, and was shot by one of the officers during the gunfight, at about 3:20 p.m.
Police are investigating around 2657 Bainbridge Avenue. A parent picking up her child from the daycare next door told reporters she saw the officers and the suspect firing at each other.
Police said Soto has eight prior arrests, including for assault and criminal possession of a firearm. The case remains under investigation.
