Follow-up: Deep Purple's Ian Gillan Issues Statement: Rest of European and UK Tour Postponed on Medical Advice

Monday, November 2, 2026 · Music · GSM News

Ian Gillan, the lead singer of British rock band Deep Purple, issued a personal statement on November 2 announcing that, on the advice of his medical team and management, the rest of the band's 2026 European and UK tour would be postponed until further notice. The statement came two days after the band announced on October 31 that he had been hospitalized after a medical emergency and that two German shows had been called off.

"Thank you for all the good wishes and support over the last few days... it means the world. I had a medical problem whilst in Leipzig which required urgent attention at the hospital," Gillan wrote. "I was hoping that I would get the all-clear to hang on until the end of the tour, but there are very serious risks involved in me doing so. As a result, and on the advice of my medical team and management, we have made the decision to postpone the rest of the European/UK 2026 tour until further notice."

"I'm very sorry about any inconvenience this may cause, but it's in the best interest all round. Thank you for your understanding," he added, signing the statement "IG." Gillan did not specify the medical problem he suffered in Leipzig.

The tour had been due to resume on November 3 in Dortmund, with stops this week in Berlin, Frankfurt and Nuremberg, followed by Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Nantes and Lyon, before closing out the month in the UK with shows in Newcastle, Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and two dates in London. All of those dates are now postponed, with no new dates yet announced. For the Leipzig and Hamburg shows postponed on October 31, the band has previously said tickets will remain valid for the rescheduled dates.

Gillan, 81, joined Deep Purple in 1969 and is the voice of classics such as "Smoke on the Water." Deep Purple released the new album Splat! in July, and the tour was staged in support of that record.
