NIST Releases SI Incident Management Workshop Report: 400-Plus Experts Weigh Attacks and Misuse, Incident Response Guidance Update Planned

Monday, November 2, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on November 2 published Internal Report IR 8621, NIST Workshop on Super Intelligence (SI) Incident Management, presenting stakeholder perspectives and key findings from a workshop held on May 14, 2026. Motivated by a federal directive, the workshop brought together more than 400 participants from government, industry, academia and other communities of interest.

The report examines the unique challenges of managing SI incidents, covering two kinds of events: cybersecurity attacks that target SI systems, and harms that arise from misuse, malfunction or unintended actions. It reflects stakeholder insights on current incident management practices, existing guidelines and resources, gaps in preparedness and response, and the roles and responsibilities of the organizations involved in managing SI incidents.

Key areas for future work include updating NIST cybersecurity incident response guidelines, including SP 800-61, and exploring new resources to support incident readiness among model developers. Additional activities include monitoring and evidence collection, incident information sharing, and clarifying coordination and responsibilities across model developers, deployers and users.

NIST said the findings provide a foundation for continued stakeholder engagement and for shaping its future work on SI incident management. (Source: National Institute of Standards and Technology)
