Iowa Opens Applications for Five-Year Out-of-School Time Grants: Up to $300,000 a Year, Deadline Dec. 31

The Iowa Department of Education in Des Moines announced on November 2 that the latest round of the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant has officially opened. Schools and community organizations can now apply for the five-year competitive grant, which supports establishing and expanding high-quality out-of-school time programs. Applications will be accepted through December 31.
Through the grant, schools and community organizations can provide academic and enrichment activities in a safe learning environment for children and youth when school is not in session, including before and after school, on teacher professional development days, and during holiday and summer breaks. The grant supports elementary and secondary students and is intended to serve communities where at least 40% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Applicants can seek up to $300,000 per year over the five-year cycle, covering operating costs such as staff salaries, field trips, activity costs and food. All applicants must complete a letter of intent by November 30, with the official application submitted through the Consolidated Accountability and Support Application (CASA) by December 31; the department is offering virtual office hours each month of the application period. Funding is provided through Title IV, Part B of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
"The 21st CCLC grant is an incredible opportunity to support Iowa schools and organizations that are providing engaging, high-quality out-of-school time programming," said Joe Collins, an education program consultant at the department, inviting community-based, faith-based, nonprofit and government organizations, as well as consortia, to apply. Last year, six Iowa school districts, one consortium of three districts and four community-based organizations were awarded five-year grants totaling more than $8.8 million.
