IOC Confirms Final List of Seven Interested Parties for the 2036 Olympic Games: Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Türkiye

The International Olympic Committee confirmed on November 2 that the list of interested parties for the 2036 Summer Olympic Games is now final, with the national Olympic committees of Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, South Africa and Türkiye in contention. The window for expressing interest closed on October 31 with no additional countries coming forward, leaving the list unchanged from when the IOC first published it on October 6. China did not express interest and is not among the seven.

The 2036 Games will be the first Olympic Games elected under the IOC's "Fit for the Future" reform framework, introduced by IOC President Kirsty Coventry in June and approved by the IOC Session. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, chair of the Future Host Commission, said the level of interest showed that countries around the world recognize the social and economic value hosting the Games can bring locally, and that the IOC would continue to work closely with all seven interested parties, supporting them in developing their projects.

According to the plans published by the bidders, Germany's candidate city is Munich, Hungary's is Budapest, India's is Ahmedabad, Qatar's is Doha and Türkiye's is Istanbul. South Korea's domestic candidate is Jeonju in Jeonbuk State, with a possible joint bid with Seoul under discussion, while South Africa has chosen Durban as its lead city. A South African victory would take the Summer Olympics to Africa for the first time; India, Qatar, Türkiye and Hungary have also never hosted a Summer Games.

Under the IOC's timetable, the seven parties will make virtual presentations to the Future Host Commission this month. The IOC will complete its feasibility assessments by March 2027, when the Executive Board will move a shortlist of bidders into a Strategic Dialogue phase. A Targeted Dialogue with one or more preferred hosts is set to open in December 2028, and the IOC Session is expected to elect the 2036 host in mid-2029. The next two Summer Games are already assigned: Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
