Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital Signs Up to $450 Million Conditional Loan Commitment With Drone Maker Neros
The U.S. Department of War announced on November 2 that its Office of Strategic Capital (OSC) has signed a conditional loan commitment of up to $450 million with Neros, Inc., a U.S.-based developer and manufacturer of dual-use small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS), to support the company's domestic manufacturing expansion and reduce reliance on foreign-made components.
The department said OSC financing, alongside additional private capital, will support Neros' planned expansion of vertically integrated domestic manufacturing capacity to produce dual-use sUAS platforms, ground control systems and critical components such as motors, radios, flight electronics, sensors and batteries, directly advancing President Donald J. Trump's Executive Order 14307, Unleashing American Drone Dominance. Neros' manufacturing facility in Torrance, in Los Angeles County, California, will help onshore production of complete drone systems and critical subcomponents, and will also supply NDAA-compliant components to other U.S. and allied drone manufacturers.
"Neros has already demonstrated an ability to design, manufacture, and deliver exceptional small unmanned aircraft systems," said David A. Lorch, Director of the Office of Strategic Capital and Senior Advisor to Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg. "OSC's investment will turbocharge Neros' ability to manufacture drones and components critical for the production of drone systems." James R. Shanahan, OSC's Senior Managing Director for Investments, said winning the drone industrial-base competition requires the United States to manufacture complete systems at scale and at competitive prices, starting with bolstering the domestic supply of critical components. Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, said the investment helps strengthen the domestic drone supply chain and achieve Secretary Hegseth's mandate for American drone dominance.
The conditional commitment specifies additional steps Neros must complete before financial close, including satisfying financial, legal, technical, investment and due diligence requirements.
