A shooting just after midnight on November 2 along Jetty Road, next to Moss Landing State Beach in the coastal community of Moss Landing in Monterey County, California, left two people dead and two others injured, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there is no ongoing threat to the Moss Landing community.

Sheriff's office spokesperson Commander Andres Rosas said at a news conference on the afternoon of November 2 that deputies, California Highway Patrol officers and California State Parks personnel responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 2 a.m. and found two people dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. Investigators then learned that a third person connected to the shooting had arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound; that person's condition was not released. A fourth person was transported from the scene to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. No one else was found at the scene.

The two people who died have not been identified. The sheriff's office said their identities are being withheld pending forensic examinations and notification of next of kin, and that autopsies will determine the causes of death. As of the news conference, investigators had not determined whether the people involved knew one another or what prompted the shooting, and the sheriff's office released no suspect information and announced no arrests.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina M. Nieto said in a statement: "This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of two lives. Our detectives are working to establish the circumstances surrounding what occurred."

At the request of the sheriff's office, California State Parks Police have closed Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach until further notice while investigators process the scene. Mike Dippel, chief park ranger for the Monterey District of California State Parks, said the beach closes at sunset and that the people involved were at the beach after hours.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Monterey County Sheriff's Office at 831-755-5111. The investigation is ongoing.
