San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office Evacuated Over Suspicious Suitcase, Reopens Hours Later on Election Eve
San Diego — The headquarters of the San Diego County Registrar of Voters in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood of San Diego, California, was evacuated on Monday afternoon, November 2, after an unattended suitcase was found in the lobby, closing the building for several hours one day before the November 3 midterm elections. The office reopened at about 4:45 p.m., and voting and ballot processing resumed.
According to the San Diego Police Department, San Diego County Sheriff's Office deputies found the suitcase in the lobby of the Registrar's headquarters at 5600 Overland Avenue at about 1:45 p.m. At about 3:10 p.m., police evacuated voters and staff from the building, closed nearby streets, and specialists evaluated the item.
County of San Diego spokesperson Aiyana Moya said the facility was evacuated out of an abundance of caution after an item left onsite required further evaluation. She added that voters should know that voting and ballot processing remain secure, and that election services continue to be available throughout the county.
As of publication, police have not disclosed what was inside the suitcase and have announced no arrests. It remains unclear who left the suitcase in the lobby, and the investigation is ongoing.
Monday was the last day of early voting in San Diego County. On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, all 221 vote centers and official ballot drop boxes across the county will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., as will the Registrar of Voters office itself; the office is responsible for processing ballots and certifying election results countywide.
