Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah — The No. 25 BYU men's basketball team beat Ohio State 94-83 at the Delta Center on the night of November 2 to open the 2026-27 season. Ohio State led 37-34 at halftime, but BYU scored 60 points in the second half to complete the comeback, leading by as many as 13.

BYU guard Robert Wright III scored a game-high 33 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including four 3-pointers; Tyler Betsey and Collin Chandler added 15 points each, Bruce Branch III scored 12 and Jaxon Kohler 11, giving the Cougars five players in double figures. The win was head coach Kevin Young's 50th at BYU. For Ohio State, Amare Bynum scored 20 points, John Mobley Jr. 14, Andrija Jelavic 13 and Justin Pippen 12. It was Ohio State's first loss in a season opener since 2003.

The game was the earliest season opener in Ohio State program history: four-year starter and school scoring leader Bruce Thornton has departed for the NBA, and head coach Jake Diebler's team is establishing a new core rotation. BYU's campus in Provo is less than an hour from Salt Lake City, giving the Delta Center crowd a near-home atmosphere. BYU next returns home to face Queens, while Ohio State goes home to host Youngstown State.
