First Los Angeles MEHKO Week Opens November 9 With More Than 70 Permitted Home Kitchens

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health in California has announced the first LA MEHKO Week, to be held November 9 to 15, with more than 70 permitted Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations (MEHKOs) taking part across Los Angeles County, from Lancaster to Lomita. Each participating home kitchen will be open at least two days during the week with a special item or discount.
A free kickoff event will be held on Saturday, November 7, from noon to 3 p.m., at the Earvin "Magic" Johnson Recreation Area, 905 E. El Segundo Blvd, in South Los Angeles. Residents can find participating kitchens, menus and hours on an interactive map at mehkoweek.com.
MEHKOs are small food businesses created under California law that let residents run a small restaurant out of their home kitchen. Under the rules, a MEHKO may serve up to 30 meals a day and 90 meals a week, prepared and sold on the same day. Los Angeles County's MEHKO permit program, run by the Department of Public Health — except in Pasadena, Long Beach and Vernon, which have their own health departments — marks its second anniversary with the event week.
MEHKO Week is presented by the COOK Alliance together with the office of Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, the Department of Public Health and the county's Department of Economic Opportunity. The county said its MEHKO program recently received a special merit award at the county's 39th Productivity and Quality Awards for advancing a safe, diverse and inclusive food economy.
