Smithsonian Opens 'At Home in Space' Gallery as Seven-Year Museum Renovation Nears Completion

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum opened its new gallery, "At Home in Space," on October 30, according to coverage published November 3, marking the near-completion of a seven-year, nearly $1 billion renovation of the flagship museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The new gallery traces the development of long-duration human spaceflight, from the space shuttle era to life aboard the International Space Station and future missions. Visitors can walk through a full-size mock-up of the ISS Destiny laboratory module and see shuttle-era equipment, flown spacesuits and other artifacts.
The renovation has proceeded in phases, with galleries reopening since 2022; five galleries were open by the museum's 50th anniversary on July 1. Under the current plan, the final gallery, "Modern Military Aviation," will open on November 11, completing the transformation of all 20 exhibition spaces. Admission is free, but visitors must reserve timed-entry passes in advance.
