Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Health · GSM News

Los Angeles County announced on November 3 that Rancho Research Institute has received a five-year federal grant of $3,044,450 to continue the Southern California Spinal Cord Injury Model System at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey, Los Angeles County, California. The award comes from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research and supports the long-term clinical and rehabilitation research system in the field of spinal cord injury.

Rancho Los Amigos is a major rehabilitation hospital in Southern California that has long served patients with spinal cord injuries. The model system combines clinical care, rehabilitation training and long-term follow-up, providing evidence for helping patients regain daily living abilities and building a body of treatment experience for physicians and rehabilitation professionals.

The county said the five-year funding will keep the model system running steadily so the research team can work without interruption from funding gaps. For patients and their families, sustained research means rehabilitation approaches can be continually tested and improved, with quality of life expected to rise as a result. The award is also an example of federal rehabilitation research funding landing in Los Angeles County, underscoring the role of local rehabilitation institutions in a national research network.
