Phoenix Chinese Landmark New Garden Closes After 84 Years

Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona — New Garden Chinese, a family-owned Chinese restaurant that served Phoenix for 84 years, closed at the end of October, the most lamented entry on the city's October restaurant-closings list.
The Arizona Republic reported on November 3 that the restaurant, at Central Avenue and Hadley Street, was the last chop suey house in town and closed because of the owners' health issues and the physical toll of running it into old age. October also saw longtime family restaurants close across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Glendale, spanning Chinese, Italian, Japanese, American and Eastern European cuisines.
Realty agent Mike Snitz said he is looking for new owners to keep the tradition alive. The end of an 84-year run reflects the shared pressures on family restaurants: staffing, costs and aging owners.
