Michigan Lion Dance Team Performs at Detroit Public Library's Children's Library

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Travel & Culture · GSM News

The Detroit Public Library's schedule for November 3 showed the Michigan Lion Dance Team visiting its Children's Library in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, to perform for young readers. According to the library, lion dancing carries a history of about 1,900 years in Chinese culture and symbolizes health, joy and good fortune, and the performers hope to bring luck and health to their audience. The team is made up of second-generation Taiwanese American students from the Detroit metropolitan area, aged 12 to 17, who meet weekly to rehearse at Michigan Chinese School, founded by Taiwanese Americans. The library listed the event under music and performing arts and cultural celebrations, open to children and families at the Children's Library.

A lion dance performance is not only a festive show but also a way for Chinese American teenagers to carry on culture in their local community: through weekly training, the young members turn movement, rhythm and teamwork into a stage-ready program and bring the tradition into community spaces such as a public library. For Chinese families in Detroit, such activities let children meet peers from Chinese school and encounter Chinese culture outside class, while giving families of other backgrounds a close-up look at what lion dancing means. The library hopes children will feel the festive atmosphere and come away with a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity.
