Follow-Up: 24.69 Inches of Rain in Brevard County, Florida; More Than 100 Stranded Drivers Rescued
East-central Florida, including Melbourne in Brevard County, was still dealing on November 3 with flooding from a historic rainstorm. National Weather Service data show the storm dropped 24.69 inches of rain at Grant-Valkaria and 24.2 inches at Malabar in Brevard County, while Melbourne had recorded 11.03 inches by 5 p.m. on November 2, breaking the station's single-day rainfall record. Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in seven counties: Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie.
Floodwaters turned roads into rivers across the area, and aerial footage from Palm Bay and other communities showed streets and neighborhoods under water, with residents getting around by boat, kayak and canoe. Brevard County sheriff's officials reported that more than 100 stranded motorists have been rescued. The Weather Service said on the morning of November 3 that more rain was possible in east-central Florida, with flood warnings still in effect for parts of Brevard, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties; drainage will take hours, and residents were warned not to drive through standing water or around barricades.
