Phoenix Man Rescued After Falling Into Six-Foot Sinkhole in His Backyard

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Society · GSM News

PHOENIX, Arizona — The Phoenix Fire Department reported that on Sunday, November 1, at about 3 p.m., a man fell into a roughly six-foot-deep sinkhole in his own backyard, suffering a chest injury and unable to climb out; a firefighter descended into the hole, rescued him and took him to a local hospital in stable condition. The incident occurred near 24th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix.

Rescue footage showed a fire department technician lowering into the sinkhole and securing the injured man before bringing him out. Meanwhile, the right front wheel of a pickup truck parked nearby had also begun sinking into the ground, and crews worked to keep the vehicle from sinking further during the rescue.

The department confirmed the man was examined at the scene and taken to a hospital in stable condition, and that no firefighters were injured. The man's name was not released; Phoenix Fire Captain DJ Lee said the sinkhole may have been caused by heavy rain on November 1.
