Atlanta-Area Voters Decide $2.096 Billion School Sales Tax Renewal and a Transportation Tax

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

On November 3, voters in the Atlanta area of Fulton County, Georgia, are deciding two local tax questions alongside the midterm ballot. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; voters in line by 7 p.m. may still vote, and absentee ballots must be returned to the county elections office by 7 p.m.

Fulton County's official consolidated sample ballot shows the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST) question would reimpose the current 1 percent education sales tax on July 1, 2027, when the current tax expires, for up to 20 calendar quarters, raising no more than $2,095,680,577: up to $1,306,195,350 for the Fulton County School District and up to $789,485,227 for Atlanta Public Schools, for school land, construction and renovation, technology and safety improvements, buses and equipment. Approval would also authorize Atlanta Public Schools to issue up to $350 million in general obligation debt payable from its share of the tax.

Fulton County voters outside the City of Atlanta are also deciding whether to impose an additional 0.75 percent sales tax for up to five years for transportation improvements and congestion reduction. Both questions require a majority to pass.
