Woman Rescued After Nearly Two Years Chained to a Bed in Fargo, North Dakota; Ex-Husband and Another Woman Charged With Kidnapping

FARGO — Fargo police in North Dakota responded on the evening of November 3 after a maintenance worker at an apartment building heard someone crying for help. Officers found a woman chained and padlocked to a bed frame, with the chain secured around her right ankle and a security camera pointed at her bed. She was taken to hospital with bruising to her face, arms and legs.

Court documents say the woman told investigators, through a language translation service, that her ex-husband, Arturo Calzada Becerril, 40, had brought her from Mexico to Fargo in 2024 and that for nearly two years she had been kept inside the apartment, chained to the bed and never allowed outside. He brought her food twice a day, she had to use a bucket by the bed as a toilet, and the bedroom windows were covered in foil. She alleged that Becerril and his girlfriend, Erendira Amoles, 41, repeatedly beat and sexually assaulted her.

Prosecutors say the woman, a U.S. citizen, was held captive in connection with Becerril's effort to obtain immigration status. Becerril said in the documents that he kept her locked up because she was addicted to drugs and he did not want her to run away and use again. These are allegations and statements in court filings that have not been tested in court.

Amoles returned to the apartment with her 8-year-old daughter shortly after police found the victim; all three adults come from the same village in Mexico. Becerril and Amoles were arrested on kidnapping and assault charges, booked into the Cass County Jail, and have appeared in court.
