Follow-Up: France's Justice Minister Says 4,914 People Have Been Detained Since October 17, With 329 Jailed

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said on BFMTV-RMC that 4,914 people have been taken into police custody (garde à vue) nationwide since violence first flared during France's current protest wave on October 17, about 70 percent of them adults, and that 329 people have been jailed.

Darmanin said 240 people were detained over the most recent weekend, far fewer than in earlier rounds. Interior Ministry figures for single protest days were about 2,628 arrests on October 17, about 1,314 on October 24, and roughly 511 to 565 on October 31. On October 19, Darmanin had put the running totals at 2,513 detained and 67 jailed since the first weekend, and instructed prosecutors to treat well-evidenced cases as organized crime.

The protests began in September, led by high-school students over school conditions, teacher shortages and the cost of living. Nationwide mobilizations followed on three consecutive Saturdays — October 17, 24 and 31 — with official turnout estimates falling from about 550,000 to about 320,000, and nights marked in Paris and other cities by smashed shops, looting and clashes with police. In late October the Senate passed a “rioters pay” bill providing for compensation of up to 10,000 euros for riot-related damage.
