University of Missouri's Kinder Institute Receives $25 Million Grant: Oxford Partnership Expands to a Full Year Abroad

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Education · GSM News

The University of Missouri announced on November 3 that the Kinder Foundation has made a $25 million, five-year grant to the university's Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy. The commitment will give Mizzou students more opportunities to study American democracy on an international stage.

The grant will go toward the institute's endowment, making it the largest endowment held at Mizzou, and brings the foundation's total investment in the institute to more than $85 million. It will strengthen research, expand faculty expertise and support graduate students, and is part of Power the Roar, the university's historic $2 billion fundraising campaign.

A major focus is the expanded partnership with the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford in England. Beginning in fall 2028, Mizzou's master's program in Atlantic history and politics will bring American and British students together for a two-year experience spanning both universities: the program, which currently includes four weeks of study at Oxford, will expand so students spend one year at Mizzou and another full year at Oxford. Students will also be able to earn additional credits through internships in London.

"The incredible commitment of Rich and Nancy Kinder reinforces Mizzou's reputation as an international leader in the study of constitutional democracy," said University of Missouri President Mun Choi. Kinder Institute Director Jay Sexton said American constitutional democracy has always been part of a wider Atlantic story, and that through the Oxford partnership students and faculty help renew the traditions of transatlantic cooperation.

Founded in 2015 with Kinder Foundation support, the Kinder Institute has grown into a leading center for the study of American political history. Rich Kinder, chairman of the foundation, earned his bachelor's degree in 1966 and law degree in 1968 from Mizzou. "We've long believed that understanding our nation's founding principles is essential to preparing future generations to lead," Kinder said. "We're pleased to support the students and faculty who are carrying that work forward."
