Follow-up: Greenland's Parliament Approves Security Deal With the US and Denmark 16-0: Danish Parliament to Vote on November 19

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · World · GSM News

Nuuk — Greenland's parliament, the Inatsisartut, voted on November 3 to approve the trilateral security agreement between Greenland, the United States and Denmark by 16 votes to 0, with seven abstentions, clearing the way for an expanded American military presence on the island. According to Danish broadcaster DR, the sitting was briefly disrupted by a dispute, but not a single lawmaker voted against the deal.

The agreement was signed by President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen on September 22 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. It updates the 1951 US-Danish defense pact, allows the United States to expand Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, and provides for new defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. It has no fixed end date, would remain in force even if Greenland becomes independent, and reaffirms Danish sovereignty over the island.

The deal still requires approval by Denmark's parliament, the Folketing, which is scheduled to hold its first debate on November 12 and a final vote on November 19. It enters into force once both parliamentary processes are complete and Washington has been formally notified; no US Senate approval is required.

Greenland is a self-governing Danish territory commanding the Arctic and North Atlantic. Trump's repeated calls for the island to become part of the United States had strained relations, and tensions eased after the September deal. A former lawmaker said after the vote that the approval brings temporary calm, but questions about the deal's value remain.
