Monterey Park Police Conduct DUI Patrols on Nov. 3: 4 p.m. to Midnight, First-Time DUI Average Cost $13,500

Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California — The Monterey Park Police Department said in a city news flash on November 3 that it would conduct DUI patrols that day from 4 p.m. to midnight, looking for drivers suspected of impaired driving.

"Impaired driving is preventable," Monterey Park Chief of Police Scott Wiese said. "It's a choice. If you've been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places."

The department reminded the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving; drivers should always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, police said.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the city said. The media contact is Sergeant Jay Silverman of the Monterey Park Police Department, 626-307-1481.
