SSA Updates Disability Listings: Revised Cardiovascular Criteria Took Effect October 30

Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) issued a program policy update on November 3, saying it updated the Listings of Impairments in its Program Operations Manual System (POMS) on November 2 to publish the revised cardiovascular disorders listings.

According to SSA, the agency previously published a final rule in the Federal Register, titled Revised Medical Criteria for Evaluating Cardiovascular Disorders, which comprehensively revises the cardiovascular disorders listings and took effect on October 30, 2026. The rule also incorporates minor corresponding terminology changes in the musculoskeletal disorders listings and the immune system disorders listings. SSA is now publishing the revised listings in POMS.

The Listings of Impairments are the medical criteria SSA adjudicators use to evaluate disability claims, so the revised cardiovascular criteria will affect how related disability applications are assessed.
