Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Apologizes for Viral Video: Hot-Mic Yankees Remark After World Series Win Prompts Call to Brian Cashman

Pat Murphy, manager of the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, publicly apologized on November 3 on the New York Post podcast The Show for a viral video. After the Brewers won the first World Series title in franchise history, a remark Murphy made on the field to first baseman Jake Bauers disparaging the New York Yankees was recorded and spread widely on social media. Murphy said that as soon as he learned the clip was out, he called Yankees general manager Brian Cashman to explain, and that he regretted saying it.
The moment came after Game 5 of the World Series: the Brewers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, to clinch the title, and Bauers, who caught the final out, presented the game ball to Murphy. Not realizing he was being recorded, Murphy told Bauers he was going to be a rich man, and told him to remember his time with the Yankees, when, in Murphy's words, the players were all playing for themselves, and to say, 'This is the way we used to do it.' The clip then went viral. Bauers played for the Yankees in 2023 and had a breakout 2026 season with Milwaukee: 26 home runs, 86 RBI, 93 runs scored and a .266 batting average.
'I called Brian Cashman right away when I heard [my comments] got out,' Murphy said on the podcast. He explained that he was not talking about the 2026 Yankees, but about big-money teams that sign a lot of players and sometimes do not become a 'Little Engine that Could' team, adding: 'I regret saying it. I felt horribly if I slandered the Yankees... It wasn't smart on my part, and I'm sorry about it.' According to the New York Post, Cashman was understanding about the call.
Murphy said the remark grew out of a running joke he had with Bauers throughout the title run: after every celebration, he would shake Bauers' hand and tease him that the rich free-agent-to-be was going to leave, that the Brewers would not be able to pay him, and that he would forget how they did things in Milwaukee. Brewers closer Trevor Megill said on another show last week that Murphy regretted the comments and meant no harm.
