Two Austin City Council Races Head Toward December 12 Runoffs

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

Austin, Texas, voted on November 3 to fill five of its ten city council district seats. According to unofficial returns from the Travis County Clerk and local reporting, no candidate cleared 50 percent in District 3 or District 5, sending both races to a December 12 runoff.

In District 3, incumbent Jose Velasquez took about 49 percent of the vote and challenger Neha Shah about 25 percent, the top two finishers, but with no majority the seat will be decided in the runoff.

In District 5, incumbent Ryan Alter led the field but likewise fell short of a majority and is expected to face David Weinberg in the December 12 runoff.

Council seats require a majority vote; when no candidate reaches it, the top two advance to a runoff. All results are unofficial until certified by the county.
