Gunman Drives Into Florida Citibank Campus and Opens Fire, Killing a Woman Before Guard Shoots Him Dead
A gunman drove through a fence and opened fire at the Citibank Center campus in Brandon, Hillsborough County, Florida, at midday on November 4, killing one woman and wounding four other people before an armed security guard shot him; the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) said preliminary information indicates the attack was targeted, and the motive remains under investigation.
Chief Deputy Frank Losat told reporters that at 12:11 p.m. ET, deputies received multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired in the campus plaza. The suspect crashed his vehicle through a gated area of the campus into an outdoor area where employees were eating lunch, then got out with a rifle, approached a woman and shot her. The woman died of her injuries.
At 12:15 p.m., an armed Citibank security guard confronted the suspect inside the campus cafeteria and the two exchanged gunfire. The suspect was shot and taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Losat credited the guard with stopping the threat.
Four other people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. About 3,200 Citibank employees were on site when the shooting began; the campus consists of four three-story office buildings. Employees were evacuated while SWAT deputies cleared the buildings room by room. The sheriff's office said 367 deputies responded, and that there was no longer a threat to the public.
Sheriff Chad Chronister said preliminary information indicates this was a targeted incident. Losat said the identities of the woman killed and of the suspect have not been released, and it is not yet known whether the two knew each other. Deputies are continuing to interview witnesses, and the sheriff's office is asking anyone with video of the incident to submit it to investigators.
Citigroup said in a statement that it was aware of an incident at its Tampa site and was coordinating with law enforcement.
