Los Angeles County Field Officers Are Checking Pet Licenses Door to Door, With a $40 Enforcement Fee for Unlicensed Pets

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · 加州 · GSM News

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) in California is reminding residents that its field licensing enforcement officers are working in the community to bring expired pet licenses into compliance and to license unregistered pets. Under county law, all dogs in the County of Los Angeles must be licensed; in unincorporated areas and most incorporated cities served by the department, cats must also be licensed, with some exceptions.

According to the department, field licensing enforcement assigns animal control officers to work in the community on expired licenses and unregistered pets. The officers usually work Wednesday through Saturday, carry records of animals whose licenses have expired, and attempt to make personal contact with each pet owner to bring them into compliance with licensing laws. Owners of unlicensed pets brought into compliance through the field program are assessed an additional field enforcement fee of $40, and failure to renew a license on time can also result in a late penalty equal to the cost of the license.

Licenses can be purchased or renewed online through the department's website, by mail with a completed application, payment, proof of rabies vaccination and proof of sterilization, at a local animal care center, or by phone at (877) 872-9738. One-year and three-year licenses are available, with the three-year fee equal to three times the yearly fee. A lost license tag can be replaced by mailing a $5 check to the department's Licensing Division at 5898 Cherry Ave., Long Beach, CA 90805, with the pet's license number noted; the Licensing Division can be reached at (562) 345-0400 and does not offer walk-in service.

The department said that once a license is issued in the field, the resident will receive a renewal notice the following year at the address on file. Residents can use the department's address locator to confirm which agency handles licensing for their home address, since the licensing provider varies by address within the county.
