Caltrans Closes State Route 203 Beyond Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge for the Winter

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · California · GSM News

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced on November 3 that State Route 203 beyond the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge in Mono County has closed for the winter season. The seasonal shutdown ends vehicle access west of the ski area's Main Lodge toward Minaret Vista and the Reds Meadow area for the duration of the winter.

The closure covers the stretch of State Route 203 from the Main Lodge west to the Mono County line at Minaret Vista. Caltrans noted that the closure does not affect access to the town of Mammoth Lakes itself, nor to the ski area: motorists can still travel on State Route 203 from U.S. Highway 395 through town up to the Main Lodge, but can no longer continue further west.

In summer, this stretch of highway is the main vehicle access to popular Eastern Sierra destinations such as Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls; with the winter closure in effect, those areas are inaccessible by regular vehicle traffic. Caltrans District 9 said heavy snowfall and severe high-elevation conditions make routine road maintenance impractical throughout the winter, and that the shutdown is a standard part of its annual winter road closures. The route typically remains closed until spring, when crews can clear snow and assess safety conditions before reopening.

Caltrans has not provided a specific reopening date. Drivers can monitor road conditions and further seasonal closure updates through the department's QuickMap service. Mammoth Mountain also shared the official closure announcement.
