Washington State's Three Initiatives: Repeal of High-Earner Tax Rejected by 58% in Early Returns

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

Washington state voters cast initial votes on three statewide initiatives on November 3, with results updating in the early hours of November 4. According to Seattle public radio station KNKX's early-morning report, Initiative 645, which would have repealed the state's tax on high earners, was rejected, with about 58% of counted ballots voting no. Initiative 001 was also trailing, with about 53% voting no, while Initiative 638 led with about 57% support. All three initiatives were backed by the conservative political action committee Let's Go Washington and touch on taxes and the reach of government, with consequences for the state's finances and policies.

King County voters, including those in Seattle, also voted on a special election for Seattle City Council District 5, King County Council seats, and a proposed increase in Seattle's transit sales tax; full results are available from King County Elections. All figures are unofficial: Washington votes entirely by mail, ballots postmarked by 8 p.m. on November 3 are valid, and later counts may shift the percentages slightly — though the wide margin on Initiative 645 has effectively settled its outcome.
