Bay Area Voters Approve Regional Transit Tax: Nearly $1 Billion a Year for Transit, With San Francisco's Prop H Passing Too

Voters in California's San Francisco Bay Area approved a regional transit tax measure in the November 3 election. As of 9:45 p.m. that night, the measure had 601,093 votes, or about 61.3% support. The 14-year tax adds 1 percentage point of sales tax in San Francisco County and 0.5 percentage point in each of Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, and is expected to raise nearly $1 billion a year for Bay Area public transit, supporting Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), Caltrain, San Francisco's Muni and the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District as they face long-standing funding shortfalls.
San Francisco voters also approved Proposition H with about 72.3% support. Prop H creates a new parcel tax, based on a property's size and type, expected to raise about $177 million a year for Muni over 15 years; the annual tax ranges from $129 per parcel to a maximum of $400,000.
Bay Area transit systems have run deficits for years as ridership fell sharply, raising the threat of service cuts and station closures. The preliminary results released November 4 show voters chose higher taxes over deep cuts. Counting continues, and final certified results will come from county election officials.
