Cincinnati Reds Hire Joe Torres as New Pitching Coach
The Cincinnati Reds announced on November 4 that Joe Torres has been hired as the team's new pitching coach, replacing Derek Johnson, who will not return. Torres had been serving as assistant pitching coach with the Cleveland Guardians and has a long working history with Reds manager Terry Francona.
Francona was hired by Cincinnati in October 2024 and inherited Johnson's staff. Johnson had been the Reds' pitching coach since October 2018; the team announced last month that he would not return. Before joining Cleveland's major league staff, Torres worked in the Guardians' minor league system for five years, and his years alongside Francona in Cleveland laid the groundwork for this reunion.
The Reds' team ERA in 2026 was 4.84, near the bottom of the league and better than only the Athletics and the Rockies. Stabilizing the pitching staff will be Torres's most immediate task. The club said it believes the rapport between Francona and Torres can help the pitching group regain its competitiveness for next season.
