NC State Coaching Search Focuses on Alumnus Philip Rivers, Who Is Already Sounding Out a Staff

The search for a new head football coach at North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, took a major step on November 4. According to USA TODAY Sports, the school has made former NFL star quarterback Philip Rivers its primary focus to become the next head coach, and Rivers has already begun sounding out potential members of his staff.
Rivers played at NC State, where he set the school record with 51 consecutive starts and had his No. 17 jersey retired. Across 16 full NFL seasons, he was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2013 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. NC State fired Dave Doeren midseason after 14 years leading the Wolfpack and needs a coach who can quickly steady the program.
The school also interviewed another alumnus, current NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, according to reports, but Rivers is in the lead. Although a jump from high school coach to college head coach is unusual, those in the industry say Rivers' extensive professional experience and deep ties to his alma mater work in his favor. The school has not formally announced a hire, and the search continues.
