Boston Red Sox Trade Left-Hander Rivera to Cardinals for 18-Year-Old Right-Hander Garcia

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · Sports · GSM News

The Boston Red Sox, of Boston, Massachusetts, made another offseason roster move this week, trading left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league right-hander Juan Garcia. The transaction came after Boston designated Rivera for assignment to create space on its 40-man roster.

Rivera, 23, made his major league debut during the 2026 season and appeared in four games for the Red Sox, including three starts, finishing 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA. His minor league numbers were stronger: across Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, he posted a 7-2 record and a 2.59 ERA in 26 appearances, including five starts, with 71 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings.

Garcia, the return, is an 18-year-old right-hander from Mexico who pitched in the Dominican Summer League in 2026, going 2-4 with a 4.40 ERA in 11 starts. The Red Sox said the trade is the latest in a series of roster decisions since the season ended, including exercising Garrett Whitlock's club option and preparing for the departure of free agents.
