Detroit's Christmas Tree Hoisted Into Place at Campus Martius Park in Wayne County, Michigan, on November 4; Tree Lighting Set for November 20

Christmas came by crane to downtown Detroit on November 4, as a towering Norway spruce grown in northern Michigan was lifted into place at Campus Martius Park, marking a key stage in the city's annual holiday-season preparations. Workers raised the tree near Woodward Avenue and Monroe Street while a couple dozen residents watched through a light drizzle, and the Detroit School of Arts Marching Band performed at the scene.
The tree, transported to Detroit from northern Michigan, is the centerpiece of the 23rd annual Detroit Tree Lighting. The lighting ceremony, presented by the DTE Foundation and produced by the Downtown Detroit Partnership, is scheduled for November 20, when Campus Martius Park will be illuminated with more than 1 million lights, officially opening the downtown holiday season.
Campus Martius Park is a signature public space in downtown Detroit, drawing large numbers of residents and visitors each holiday season to see the lights and join the festivities. Organizers say the lighting ceremony will feature a series of celebrations, with the program to be announced closer to the event. Downtown businesses are also looking to the season to bring more foot traffic to the area.
For Detroiters, the tree's arrival is one of the most ritual moments of every winter. Despite the light rain on November 4, onlookers stayed in high spirits, many taking photos. Organizers remind residents that temporary traffic arrangements may be in place on some downtown streets around the lighting ceremony, and advise checking official updates before traveling.
