'Second Line in the Sky' Light Display to Return to Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, Honoring Victims of the Terror Attack

Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · City · GSM News

New Orleans announced on November 4 that the "Second Line in the Sky" light installation will return to Bourbon Street this year. First presented last year as a temporary memorial honoring the victims of the January 1, 2025 terror attack, the display will meet residents and visitors for a second consecutive year.

According to the announcement, "Second Line in the Sky" will form a canopy of lights, handkerchiefs and musical imagery above the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Bourbon Street, on display from November 23, 2026 through January 3, 2027. The "second line" is a distinctive New Orleans parade tradition in which people wave handkerchiefs and follow a brass band, for celebrations as well as for farewells to the dead; the installation lifts that tradition into the sky as an expression of remembrance and unity.

The idea was conceived by Katy Casbarian of Arnaud's Restaurant and brought to life by Studio West, drawing attention from residents and visitors when it debuted last year. Its return this year signals the memorial's evolution from a one-time temporary project into an ongoing tradition, adding a poignant landmark to Bourbon Street's holiday season.

For New Orleans, Bourbon Street is not only the street visitors know best but also where the 2025 New Year's terror attack took place. Bringing back "Second Line in the Sky" as the holiday season approaches is both a tribute to the victims and a statement of a city moving forward after tragedy. Organizers say the public is welcome to view the display on Bourbon Street throughout its run.
