Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Reminds Residents: 2027 Health Coverage Open Enrollment Is Under Way, Enroll by December 15 for January 1 Coverage

The Louisiana Department of Insurance reminded residents on November 4 that open enrollment for 2027 health insurance coverage began on November 1, giving Louisianans the opportunity to enroll in or change coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Timing decides when coverage starts: enroll in a plan by December 15 and coverage begins January 1, 2027; enroll by the final deadline of January 15 and coverage begins February 1, 2027.

"Finding the right health insurance plan begins with understanding your options and making informed decisions about your coverage," Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said. "Take time to explore your options and ensure you choose a plan that fits your health care needs." The department noted that plans and premiums change every year, and that this year has brought significant federal changes resulting in premium increases and alterations to plan offerings, so residents should review the options in their area and make sure a plan includes their doctors. A licensed health insurance agent can help residents understand their options, answer questions and determine whether they qualify for a premium tax credit.

Five health insurers are offering individual marketplace plans in Louisiana for 2027: Ambetter Health of Louisiana, AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, CHRISTUS Health Plan, Louisiana Blue, and UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company.

The department also reminded residents that if they do not elect coverage by January 15, they will be unable to get an individual marketplace plan unless they qualify for a special enrollment period due to a qualifying life event.
