At the regular press conference on November 4, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, answering a question on the concurrent visits to China by Saudi and Iranian national security officials, said that Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, had recently met separately in Beijing with Saudi and Iranian officials in charge of national security affairs, exchanging views in depth on the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region.

Mao said stability in the Gulf region bears not only on the well-being of regional countries and peoples, but also on global energy supply and world peace and security. As tensions escalate in the Middle East, China is willing to strengthen communication and dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Iran and other regional countries, and the pressing task is to avoid a renewed outbreak of war that would harm the region's people.

China will continue to follow the initiatives and proposals put forward by President Xi Jinping on promoting peace and security in the Middle East, uphold an objective and impartial position, support Iran and the United States in resolving their disputes through negotiation, advance a political solution to the Yemen issue, and help build a sound and comprehensive solution for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Mao said. She added that China hopes regional countries will uphold mutual respect and good-neighborliness and jointly build a new regional security architecture that is common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable.

Mao said both Saudi Arabia and Iran highly appreciate President Xi's initiatives and proposals, expressed willingness to maintain dialogue and communication with all parties in the spirit of the Beijing Agreement, and welcome China's continued constructive role.
